From the beginning, which goes back now fifty years, The J-B Piano Company
has been owned and operated by master piano technicians. This gives us
a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the experience of the piano as
it lives with you in your home. We see how hours of practicing affect
it. How the weather changes the tuning. How it keeps its value in
financial and emotional terms. We work on the same piano over decades;
sometimes with two or more different owners.
Most pianos in the San Francisco Bay Area require tuning twice a year. That ensures that they are in good tune whenever anyone sits down to play. Some teachers are on a schedule of four times a year for their own enjoyment and the betterment of their pupils’ ears.
When you play the piano on notes, say an octave and a half above middle C, you are striking three strings with every keystroke. So the sour sound of an out of tune piano is the sound of three strings out of phase with one another: like three singers attempting to hit the same note but missing horribly. A well tuned instrument is truly a joy to play even if other aspects of the piano are not in the best of shape.
